Best Walking and Hiking Trails in the Area

Walking and hiking are excellent forms of exercise. They get your blood pumping, increase your heart rate, and allow you to take in the spectacular views of the Delaware Valley and surrounding areas.

Exercise is important for staying healthy, and walking and hiking can be so much fun that you forget you’re actually working out. And with the summer months approaching, you may be looking to get outside for some adventure in the sun.

Check out some of the best walking and hiking trails in the area for a few ideas on where  you can go.

Wissahickon Valley Park

Forbidden Drive runs from the merging point of Monoshone and Wissahickon Creeks all the way to the Philadelphia city limits, adjacent to Wissahickon Creek. The path is a mostly flat crushed-stone surface, so it’s perfect for all ages. There are many trees that provide shade on hot, sunny days, and the creek provides a scenic view as you walk.

The trails wind up the ridge for added difficulty for those looking to take their workout up a notch. Hikers can also learn a lot during their hike, as there are nearly two dozen historical, geological, and anthropological sites throughout the trails.

Anson B. Nixon Park

Anson B. Nixon Park is located on North Walnut Street, just off State Street, north of downtown Kennett Square. With over 106 acres, the park includes two ponds, streams, woodlands, and 3 miles of walking trails. It’s open from dawn to dusk daily.

If you’re interested in activities other than walking and hiking, this park offers disc golf tournaments, dance performances, and a summer concert series.

White Clay Creek State Park

Located in Newark, DE, this lush park is filled with greenery as well as sparkling streams for scenic views as you hike across the 37 miles of trails. These trails lead to historic sites and scenic vistas that overlook valleys and rock outcrops.

When you’re done with your hike, relax at the large picnic pavilion or enjoy some of the outdoor activities that are always taking place at the park.

Appalachian National Scenic Trail – Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail extends along the Appalachian Mountains, and of its 2,174 miles, 28 miles are located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. These trails provide hours or days of hiking as well as majestic views and wildlife sightings.

Biking is prohibited on the trails, and animals must be on a 6-foot-long leash. It’s also recommended that hikers carry water, as the water along the trails may not be suitable for drinking.

These parks are located nearby and are perfect for enjoying nature while also working up a sweat. It’s important to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day to keep your joints and muscles healthy as well as for your cardiovascular health.
